Betting Strategies and Horses to Follow

When we know a few favourites that are risks we can use this knowledge to punt profitably in exotics like trifectas etc, but we also need to know some horses to follow out of the meeting. These are horses that normally we would have to ourselves as no similar service exists. We need to spend a lot of time watching videos to work out the best runs off sectional times. Punters don't need 10 horses to follow they need a couple that they can follow with confidence preferably at good prices so they don't have to bet beyond their means to show a profit.

So as to give prospective clients a look at what a weekly Saturday Sectional Times report entails, the totally unedited report that went to clients from 22/09/2007 is attached. The report encompasses each individual runner’s own sectional time, Darwin betting fluctuations, how many times a horse is hit hard by a senior jockey - as too much whip use is historically proven to contribute to giving the horse a gutbuster, relevant steward’s report information and any other observations I make in respect of soreness of a particular horse through its leg action or head carriage etc.

A report for each of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne Saturday meetings is able to be purchased by clients, providing the track is rated any of "fast", "good" or "dead" on a Saturday race day. No report is issued when the track is rated "slow" or "heavy". Upon joining and paying the prescribed 52-week subscription, clients get reports emailed directly to their preferred email address.

SYDNEY SECTIONAL TIMES REPORT FOR 22/8/09

Eight races were run at Randwick last Saturday on a “dead 4” track for Race 1 and a “good 3” track for the remainder.

The eight races were run over just four distances – 4 x 1200, 2 x 1400, 1 x 1600 and 1 x 2400. As at least one of the 1200 metre races and one of the 1400 metre races were run within two seconds of the track record, doing a table up on them is a good idea.

In the four 1200 metre races from slowest to fastest they read:

WINNER
RACE FIRST 600
(Extrapolated to 1200)
RACE LAST 600
OVERALL TIME
(Time off track record)
IVORY PEGASUS
36.04
(1.12.08)
34.61
1.10.65
(-2.33)
DEER VALLEY
35.40
(1.10.80)
34.99
1.10.39
(-2.07)
RAREFIED
35.05
(1.10.10)
34.93
1.09.98
(-1.66)
SWIFT ALLIANCE
35.30
(1.10.60)
34.53
1.09.83
(-1.51)

From this table we can see that Swift Alliance’s race is the best over that distance as his field went out the second quickest of the four races (0.25 of a second (1.5 lengths) slower than only Rarefield’s but Swift Alliance and crew get home 0.40 of a second (2.40 lengths) quicker than Rarefield. Note that is no disgrace as Rarefield’s field, given the quality of some of the runners in Swift Alliance’s race.

Deer Valley’s field aren’t headed to dizzy heights as they go out 0.35 of a second (2.10 lengths) slower than Rarefield’s crew and 0.10 of a second (just over half a length) slower than Swift Alliance’s field yet Deer Valley’s field get home 0.06 of a second (about a neck) slower than Rarefield and 0.46 of a second (2.76 lengths) slower than Swift Alliance – the upshot being that Deer Valley’s field will struggle out of their own after range.

Ivory Pegasus and her field are headed nowhere either as if you line them up with say Rarefield’s field, Ivory Pegasus and crew go out 0.99 of a second (6 lengths) slower than Rarefield’s field but Ivory Pegasus and crew only get home 0.32 of a second (1.92 lengths) faster so the entire field from Ivory Pegasus’ race are headed nowhere. So I’ve established that the best races over 1200 metres in order of merit are: 1) Swift Alliance, 2) Rarefield, 3) Deer Valley and Ivory Pegasus. Now in order of slowest first 600, which means they ought to be able to sprint home the fastest last 600 we should therefore find that the quickest last 600’s are from Ivory Pegasus’ race, next fastest should come from the second slowest first 600 (Deer Valley), next from the third slowest first 600 (Swift Alliance) and the slowest last 600’s are entitled to come from the Rarefield race as that race went out the quickest.

So therefore let’s see what 10 horses ran the fastest last individual 600’s of the three 1200 metre races. Ignore Ivory Pegasus’ race as they went out too slow. This is a good way to gauge the “class” of a horse.

So the table shows us that many good runs emanated from Swift Alliance’s race – with a view to the future Spring races.

From slowest to fastest in the two 1400 metre races they read:

WINNER
RACE FIRST 800
(Extrapolated to 1400)
RACE LAST 600
OVERALL TIME

MOTI

*Track record is 1.21.59

From this table we can see these two races virtually mirror each other – with a reversal of splits as Moti’s field goes out one second (6 lengths) slower than Trusting’s field and then conversely Moti’s field gets home 0.67 of a second (4.02 seconds) faster, so Trusting’s was obviously marginally the better win.

RACE 1 SUMMARY
This race was a waste of time, but clients of all three State services will at least recognise that Streetfighter came out of the good overall time race won by Pacino at Caulfield seven days earlier. This winner was another endorsement for races run in good times, as at least when a race is run in good time overall, all starters have had a good conditioning run also.

RACE 2 SUMMARY
The overall time here was woeful, but they were never going to run fast overall time after they went out their first 1000 in only 61.70 which is 1.38.72 pace for 1600 metres, so Lodge The Deeds did a good job to run home over the top of them. His good first up run was noted in the relevant report.
Emperor Bonaparte ran on, but never looked likely to pick up the winner and I thought media talk of him being unlucky through being held up was nonsense.
The rest weren’t in the hunt with Sir Fussalot being a bitter disappointment after he had got away with grand larceny in front.

RACE 4 SUMMARY
Discussed in the earlier table and Rarefield was dominant sectionally, ridden quietly.
Shellscrape’s not much good. “They” all get carried away with a horse after it wins one or two races.
Onemorenomore was only just a run but he must have been fat judging by his Darwin fluctuation.
Sniplaz isn’t much good either
Delago Bolt is half a fruit look and can get into more strife than Dagwood.
In summary, the only acceptable run came from the winner.

Albert The Fat was no hope from back there but he’s one dimensional, so that’s the way to ride him. When there is no great pace on up front he’s vulnerable.
Swift Alliance has only been beaten once in his career to date and he sprinted quickly here.
Bryannbo’s Gift is very honest.
Hello Pretty ran a good race and looked sore by his head carriage.
Roman Emperor (11th) and Yallingup (last) ran good enough races on resuming, when the slow first 600 is taken into account.

RACE 6 SUMMARY
Discussed in the table and you can see by the extrapolated time in that, that they were in target to smash the track record.
This winner Trusting is beautifully bred as his mother Legible was a classy mare. I’m betwixt and between what to think here as on the one hand the positive is that he ran good overall time, beat all age horses – and ran a dominant sectional – but the negative is he had 8.5 kilos (well over a stone in the old) less weight than all other runners and the leader Court Command was on target to smash the track record by 1.21 seconds (7.26 lengths) as he reached the 600 metre mark, so it is highly unlikely that Trusting will be in a race with such electric speed for a long time, so can he be as effective when there is no speed on, or alternatively if they try to ride him closer, he may not finish off.
Court Command simply went out too fast so his run was okay to still be there at the 200, when he was second up in just 10 days.
Mr Baritone, a wet tracker, ran a good race on a hard track.
Racing To Win had no luck when he had a full head of steam up in the straight.
O’Lonhro raced well given the jump up in class he faced at just his fourth race start. Again he’s stoutly bred being by Lonhro out of that good mare Mamzelle Pedrille.

Overraced early and was a minimum of 3 wide the trip. SIIR Jockey Munce said the filly was disappointing. Stable rep said “it was the intention to remove the winkers” (don’t think that will find nearly 10 lengths pal – maybe removing the glue on shoes might help?}
RACE 8 SUMMARY
Discussed in the earlier table.
If you could take one home out of the race you’d probably walk out the front gate with So Anyway. She ran fifth in the Golden Slipper at 150/1, and her run here was good.
Deer Valley won after being wide the trip but the slowish overall time explains that.
Schipper I’d noted at her previous start had a nice future. Judging by this run it will be as a cart horse because she never gave a yelp here. That’s not the same horse I saw last time. Some of these Jason Coyle trained horses can’t run two races alike – like Trusting goes from 7th to 1st etcetera.

Horses that are considered big risks in Saturday metropolitan class at their next start are:
